Motivational Speech
Motivation is one of the hardest parts of making anything happen. You can have all your ducks in a row, all the free time you need, and even outside help but without the proper motivation it’s really difficult to get anything done, even things you want to do! How do you find motivation when it’s hiding from you? I’m sure everyone has their own answers to that question, but I’m going to dive into mine. Every situation is different, so they all require taking time to understand why you’re demotivated.
Sometimes, a task can seem huge and daunting. When that happens, it helps me to break down the tasks into smaller goals that are more easily accomplished. Other times, outside factors can suppress interest in what you’re doing. In a situation like that it can really help to take a moment and examine the source of the problem. Finally, at times you could be facing something you don’t even want to deal with. The best approach to that is to just get it done.
There are a few things to keep in mind no matter what situation you’re in. Firstly, and most important, go easy on yourself. Second, and nearly as important, it’s okay if it takes a while. And lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Motivational Breakdown
Let’s talk about breaking down a task. I’ll use a real situation from my experience. Just over two months ago I moved back to the States and into a friends house. He didn’t have a room ready for me but he did have a couple spare bedrooms that have been unused for years and were filled with stuff. If I wanted my own room it was up to me to make it happen.
So I took the huge and daunting task of cleaning the room and moving into it and I broke that task down. First, I had to deal with packing the stuff everywhere. That alone was a big task, so I just broke that down further and grouped everything into categories. Once that was done I started boxing up one category at a time. I focused on doing that until I finished and moved onto the next step.
The next step was the actual cleaning, so I broke that down into smaller groups. I had to clean the surfaces, I had to clean the carpet, and I had to clean other, smaller areas. So that’s what I did, I first cleaned the surfaces, wiping down everything. Once I was done, I vacuumed, picking up anything I had wiped off the surfaces. After that it was time to scrub the carpet, so I went at it, over and over until I felt it was ready.
Motivational Sinks
In everyday life there are things that demand your attention, and a lot of times those things can sap your motivation to accomplish anything. When you’re experiencing this, it’s really hard to get through. The best approach to situations like this is to take some time to be introspective so you can understand what’s going on. Many times, understanding why you’re demotivated is all it takes to help.
With this approach it is possible you may find other things you’ll want/need to do. It’s okay when that happens because it just means you’re closer to finding a solution. Once those other things are identified and addressed you may see your motivation returning in spades!
For me, I was having a hard time making myself actually work on the room. After examining the situation, I found I was having sleep issues, which left me tired. Once I addressed that, I was able to get myself working again on the room.
Motivating Motivation
Frequently, when you find other things you need to accomplish to bring back your motivation, it can be really had to find the impetus to do them. And that’s where my final approach comes in. . . Just do it! Really, that’s the biggest and best approach; fake it till you make it! It isn’t nearly as easy as it sounds though. There is no singular way for everyone to take this step.
I’ve found using reminders helps me. Depending on what exactly you’re trying to get done, a reminder is a great way to keep the idea active in your mind. Then when it hits, just spend a few minutes doing whatever it is. Just make sure you set the next reminder and keep the cycle going. Even a few minutes spent everyday working towards a goal is better than nothing!
Motivational Reminders
There are other things you need to keep in mind when you’re facing these issues. The biggest and most important of them is to go easy on yourself. Everyone struggles with something. Beating yourself up will not help you in any way. You have to learn to forgive yourself and be okay with setbacks. There were days I just couldn’t bring myself to clean, so I had to be okay with that.
Another important element to keep in mind is it’s okay for things to take longer than you feel they should. Don’t compare yourself with others! Just because it took longer to get something done than someone else does not mean you’ve failed. Just getting it done is a win! Even though it took me nearly two months to get my room ready, I’m living in it now.
Finally, and nearly as important as everything else here, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are people in the world who will gladly help you. There may even be people active in your life right now who want to help and are just waiting for you to ask. For me, it was my friend, my roommate, who helped with the cleaning. Of course, it was all his stuff, in his house. . .
Get Motivated!
So there you have it. There it is, the secret to motivating yourself into getting anything done. Sure, it won’t work for everyone, but if this can help even a single person I’ll be happy. Just remember to take your time when you’ve lost motivation, step back and examine why you’re feeling demotivated. Don’t beat yourself up if it’s taking too long or you’re still having issues.
Break down whatever you’re doing into smaller tasks or goals, and then just do it, even if for only a few minutes every day. If you’re still having issues, find someone who can help. If you stick to it, and put these ideas into use, you’ll find it will be a lot easier to motivate yourself next time!
