New Projects

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series The Projects Project

Welcome to something new and different. This is the beginning of (hopefully) a new direction for this site. I mean, what was there will still be there, those things will keep going, but this will add more. And hopefully help me focus and bring my creativity back and work on some project ideas I have.

Welcome to Projects

So, what are projects? They’re all kinds of things I’ve thought about doing. Some are just the beginnings of ideas, others will be things I’ve put a lot of time into already but never finished. It’ll be a place for me to bring together ideas and hopefully people to help expand. Right now I’ve got my ideas and work spread throughout many different places, sites, and mediums.

As time goes on, I’ll add more projects, and hopefully best of all, work on them. I’ll add new blog categories for each project as I go, which will help me structure things a bit. But for now I think I’ll just throw down a little bit of everything. Maybe structure it in a bit of a list? Can’t hurt, right?

What Kind of Projects?

Well, I guess there’s basically a couple of different divisions. There’s physical, there’s digital, there’s mechanical. There’s gardening, robotics, games. I’ve had ideas that stretch across any number of spectrums. Some are realistic, some are fantasy, some are just fun.

Maybe my first real project for the site is to figure out how to add them?

Classification of Projects

I guess really what I’m going to do is talk in terms of WordPress to classify and divide my projects. I’ve basically already decided how to do this, so I’ll just spell out my idea. I’ve already added a category of blog post called Projects. This is the first post in that category. For each unique project, I’ll create a new sub-category.

Now, creative writing . . . Maybe there’ll be a sub-category of Projects for creative writing, then another sub-category of creative writing for the actual stories? Maybe if I layer stories, write a few pages on chapter 1, then write a few more another day, those can then be new categories? Sure, that works for now. In time I’ll see about moving my already written stories over here in that way.

Game guides? Same thing! It’ll be a sub-category of projects, which will have a sub-category for the game, then another deeper sub-category for what that is? Maybe, then when the guide is complete it can become a page? Yeah, guides should be pages, but work on the guides can be blog posts. That just makes sense.

Now, of course, I can easily change categories, shuffle them around, add in new categories, push things further down the “tree”. They’re easier to manage that way. Easy to change if needed.

Tags

Now blog posts are not only categorized, but they can also be tagged. So guess what? I’ll use that to break down the actual parts of the project. So let’s say I’m working on my Uberlaser of Waterification. One post may be about the electronics, so that’ll be tagged as such. And maybe in there I’m working with an actual laser, so that’ll be a tag.

Another post I have to do some gardening, cause this one plant has certain properties I need to make the laser give me the right color light. So that post will be tagged with gardening. Then I’ve also got just a general garden project. Those posts will be tagged gardening as well. Sounds good!

What Projects?

No I don’t actually have any ideas for the Uberlaser of Waterification, sorry to disappoint. But I do already have a lot of projects I’ve worked on or want to work on. Let’s take a look, shall we?

In no specific order:

  • Start a cult
  • Build robots
  • Create a wireless mesh network that runs on solar
  • 3D print a boat
  • Create comics
  • Create a collectible card game
  • Smart baby wallpaper
  • Create videos
  • Do things with a Raspberry Pi
  • Start a podcast

What’s next?

I guess now that I’ve got all that down, there are a few things I really need to do. First, I really need to get some artwork. I know that sounds strange, but with the way WordPress works, I need images for the header! I’m actually not even sure how this will look without a featured image.

So as a test, I’ve published this without that featured image, and as I suspected, it just doesn’t work well. I need something now! Maybe a free stock photo. For now I’ll just grab one from Pexels. I’ll probably end up using the same featured image for each category, which is okay.

I know I’m also going to need to take everything I’ve done that I want to add here as a project. That’ll take some time and planning. More time than planning really. I’ve got a lot of ground work laid out for a lot of ideas already. I just need to consolidate it here in some fashion.
